Le duo est alors au sommet grâce au succès du single « Tainted Love », il souhaitait illustrer leurs excès en tout genre et leur attrait pour la marginalité et la déviance. Le titre de l’album vient d’une enseigne de Soho et le disque se veut la bande son d’un Peep Show
Le disque est composé de morceaux de pop synthétique. On y retrouve les titres phares que sont « Youth », « Say Hello, Wave Goodbye », et bien évidemment l’incontournable « Tainted Love ».
Toutefois si l’on s’attache au contenu des chansons on s’aperçoit que certains titres se détachent de cette thématique. Les morceaux « Chips On My Shoulder » ou « Secret Life » décrivent notamment les quartiers ou Marc Almond et David Ball ont grandi, et « Bedsitter » leur sentiment suite à leur envol vers le succès.
Ce premier album de Soft Cell a eu une énorme influence sur les groupes pop qui sont apparus les années suivantes, à l’image de Bronski Beat ou des Pet Shop Boys.
