California rapper REASON toiled in relative obscurity before linking up with the Top Dawg Entertainment label in 2018. His appearance on the Kendrick Lamar executive-produced soundtrack album for blockbuster superhero film Black Panther jump-started his career, and before long he signed on with the TDE roster and re-released one of his earlier mixtapes to wider distribution with the label's help. New Beginnings is REASON's debut studio album, arriving after years spent grinding out self-released mixtapes and shaping his craft. The countless hours spent developing a style come through from the first bars of opening track "Something More." Complex wordplay and storytelling make up the rhymes of this song, the energy amplifying as REASON lays out the details of his come-up. After this relatively subtle opener, New Beginnings moves directly into a more aggressive tone. "Stories I Forgot" packs relentlessly delivered rhymes onto a hard-hitting beat without losing lyrical depth. "Pop Shit" continues the energy but finds REASON switching up his flow as he trades verses with labelmate ScHoolboy Q and loops a sinister hook. Other big-name guests show up on standout tracks, including Vince Staples on the piano-sampling brag song "Sauce," JID contributing a labyrinthine verse on the golden-era-flavored "Extinct," and uncredited backing vocals from Kendrick Lamar on "Show Stop." "Westside" takes an abrupt turn to smooth R&B, REASON's husky singing voice duetting with Spillage Village vocalist Mereba. New Beginnings demonstrates incredible range, moving effortlessly between styles without ever sounding too varied or becoming inconsistent. The guest contributions and top-shelf production add to the excitement, but it's REASON's flexible and often mesmerizing talent that stays at the core of every track.
