Never Too Much est le troisième album de Luther Vandross après les tours de chauffe que furent Luther Vandross (1976) et This Close to You (1978) parus chez Cotillion.
Celui qui fut l'orchestrateur de David Bowie sur la période Young Americans trouve ici une formule funky qui sied à son chant souple et aérien. Le titre phare « Never Too Much » est resté deux semaines au sommet des charts, et le single suivant « Don't You Know That » est parvenu à la 10ème position. D'autres morceaux comme « Sugar and Spice (I Found Me a Girl) » ou « She's a Super Lady » n'auraient pas démérité d'y figurer plus longtemps. Le chanteur livre également sa version du titre « You Stopped Loving Me » déjà chanté par Roberta Flack.
Avec un style plus dynamique que la réputation de crooner soul qui lui collera à la peau, Never Too Much enchaîne les up tempo avec brio, et bénéficie d'une production scintillante, de la basse slappée de Marcus Miller et des choeurs de Cissy Houston et Norma Jean Wright. La seule ballade du lot une reprise du classique « A House Is Not a Home » au final.
