Une poignée de singles et deux EP (Blush et Creature Songs) auront permis à ce jeune quatuor londonien, fondé en 2010 à Londres, de poser les bases de sa formule musicale. Si ces premières cartouches laissaient à entendre un revival du rock alternatif qui avait fait florès dans les années 1990, le premier album studio de Wolf Alice ne saurait se limiter à cela, bien au contraire.
Comme mû par la peur de décevoir l’auditeur et pour souligner un peu plus la dualité de son nom, Wolf Alice s’aventure sur des chemins très différents, au risque de perdre de son identité à certains carrefours : il tente ainsi le grand écart entre la douceur éthérée de l’introductif « Turn To Dust », qui n’est pas sans rappeler l’affectivité de London Grammar, et les écorchures héritées d’une écoute intensive des Pixies de « You’re A Germ ».
Entre ces deux extrêmes, les musiciens parviennent à intercaler quelques élans post-punks comme « Giant Peach », quelques madeleines de Proust shoegaze comme « Swallowtail » ou encore, de façon plus dommageable, des égarements electro-pop un peu faciles comme « Freazy » et « Soapy Water », ce dernier portant bien son nom. L’unité vient de la voix d’Ellie Rowsell, qui donne de la consistance à l’ensemble et orchestre les humeurs des différents morceaux, jouant de ses charmes, séduisant par sa douceur avant d’asséner des coups de griffes rageurs au mitan du disque et de revenir à des intentions plus ensorceleuses pour clore l’objet.
Cette interprétation instinctive contraste bien avec la sophistication de l’ensemble et offre du relief à ce groupe qui se cherche encore sur ce premier effort, mais fait étalage de tout son potentiel pour la suite.
