Edité lors de sa première version en double disque, le troisième album de Joe Cocker rend compte de la triomphale tournée du chanteur anglais aux États-Unis en 1970. Mais, par-delà une authentique réussite artistique, on peut percevoir le désastre psychologique qu’elle provoque. Le chanteur est en effet pris dans un pandémonium, où s’ébroue une quarantaine de musiciens, amis et alliés, marionnettes dont les fils sont tenus par Leon Russell, pianiste, compositeur et chef d’orchestre.



Avant donc de perdre son âme dans un cirque musical (et cinématographique, puisque la prestation est filmée), dont il mettra plus de dix années à s’extraire, Joe Cocker enregistre le meilleur album de sa carrière. Cela se passe au Fillmore East, en cette fin de mois de mars, où on a pu rassembler la batterie de Jim Keltner, le saxophoniste Bobby Keys, Don Preston à la trompette et Carl Radle accroché à sa basse.



Les chansons sont toutes superbement chantées (et c’est un sommet lorsque Joe Cocker s’emploie à dynamiter le « Honky Tonk Woman » des Rolling Stones), déclinant les très riches heures des deux premiers albums du chanteur (« Feelin’ Alright » ou « Delta Lady »), mais offrant encore davantage d’inédits (avec un superbe renvoi d’ascenseur vers Ray Charles, immortel inspirateur dans « Let’s Go Get Stoned »).



Mad Dogs... déroule synthétiquement un magnifique témoignage sur une époque, de grands moments musicaux et le sommet discographique d’une carrière. Mais, pour le désastre pressenti et le gouffre à venir, c’est un disque un peu triste, aussi.



L’album atteint la deuxième position des classements de ventes de disques pop et trois singles en sont extraits : « Delta Lady » (69ème position), « She Came in Through the Bathroom Window » des Beatles (30ème) et un « Cry Me a River » immortalisé en son temps par Julie London (11ème).

Edité lors de sa première version en double disque, le troisième album de Joe Cocker rend compte de la triomphale tournée du chanteur anglais aux États-Unis en 1970. Mais, par-delà une authentique réussite artistique, on peut percevoir le désastre psychologique qu’elle provoque. Le chanteur est en effet pris dans un pandémonium, où s’ébroue une quarantaine de musiciens, amis et alliés, marionnettes dont les fils sont tenus par Leon Russell, pianiste, compositeur et chef d’orchestre.



Avant donc de perdre son âme dans un cirque musical (et cinématographique, puisque la prestation est filmée), dont il mettra plus de dix années à s’extraire, Joe Cocker enregistre le meilleur album de sa carrière. Cela se passe au Fillmore East, en cette fin de mois de mars, où on a pu rassembler la batterie de Jim Keltner, le saxophoniste Bobby Keys, Don Preston à la trompette et Carl Radle accroché à sa basse.



Les chansons sont toutes superbement chantées (et c’est un sommet lorsque Joe Cocker s’emploie à dynamiter le « Honky Tonk Woman » des Rolling Stones), déclinant les très riches heures des deux premiers albums du chanteur (« Feelin’ Alright » ou « Delta Lady »), mais offrant encore davantage d’inédits (avec un superbe renvoi d’ascenseur vers Ray Charles, immortel inspirateur dans « Let’s Go Get Stoned »).



Mad Dogs... déroule synthétiquement un magnifique témoignage sur une époque, de grands moments musicaux et le sommet discographique d’une carrière. Mais, pour le désastre pressenti et le gouffre à venir, c’est un disque un peu triste, aussi.



L’album atteint la deuxième position des classements de ventes de disques pop et trois singles en sont extraits : « Delta Lady » (69ème position), « She Came in Through the Bathroom Window » des Beatles (30ème) et un « Cry Me a River » immortalisé en son temps par Julie London (11ème).
