Figure récurrente de la scène et des écrans, Linda Lavin a joué dans une cinquantaine de films et est apparue dans une trentaine de comédies musicales, ce qui lui a valu six nominations aux Tony Awards dont un trophée pour son retour dans Homeward Bound (1987). Les téléspectateurs la connaissent aussi et surtout pour son rôle dans la série Alice (1976-1985), dans laquelle elle interprétait le personnage principal d'Alice Hyatt, veuve travaillant dans un dinner du bord de route.
Formée à la comédie et au chant depuis sa plus tendre enfance, la star de Broadway a pourtant attendu longtemps avant d'enregistrer son premier album, Possibilities (2011), un bouquet d'une douzaine de reprises de standards du jazz, joliment interprétés. Neuf ans après, Linda Lavin renouvelle l'expérience avec Love Notes. Situé dans le même registre, celui-ci explore d'autres classiques de la chanson, à commencer par « I've Got My Eyes on You », une mélodie de Cole Porter qu'elle magnifie de sa voix profonde et sensuelle. Rapidement, en deux-trois tours de piste, l'interprète emporte l'adhésion par la souplesse de sa palette vocale.
Tour à tour, qu'elle soit accompagnée par un orchestre au swing efficace ou de manière plus intime un trio de jazz avec guitare ou piano, la chanteuse use de son sens de la séduction sur des pièces inaltérables comme « I Wish I Were in Love Again » de Rodgers & Hart), la bossa nova « Chega de Saudade (No More Blues) » de Joao Gilberto ou les compositions « Stars Would Fall » de Thelonious Monk et « Just Squeeze Me (But Don't Tease Me) » de Duke Ellington. Au passage, Linda Lavin réunit deux titres pour en faire un medley, comme c'est le cas pour « Not a Care in the World » popularisé par Peggy Lee et
« Shall We Dance » de Rodgers & Hammerstein, « I Can't Tell You Why » et
« I Walk a Little Faster », puis « Ace in the Hole » et
« Rap Tap on Wood » et enfin « It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) » et « I Got Rhythm », un couplage rythmé qui associe les maîtres « Duke » Ellington et George Gershwin, nés à quelques mois d'écart.
L'exercice, agréable et réussi, se termine en beauté sur « You Must Believe in Spring » du duo Jacques Demy/Michel Legrand (repris dans la version de Bill Evans) et « How High the Moon » (Nancy Hamilton/Morgan Lewis), à la façon swing de Benny Goodman, avec piano, guitare et solo de violon.
