L’écoute du quatrième album de l’homme de San Diego est équivalente à l’absorption d’un tonneau de cocktails un peu alcoolisés et très sucrés : le lendemain matin, on se réveille affecté d’une légère migraine et parfaitement conscient de la vacuité de l’existence.
Tout a pourtant bien commencé avec « I Won’t Give Up », premier single envoyé voici quelques temps déjà en avant-garde du programme : même si la mélodie ne va pas changer le monde, une guitare gracile et un refrain manifestement conçu pour être repris en chœur par des jeunes hommes barbus et des jeunes filles en robe à fleurs, offrent quelques doux souvenirs des fastes d’antan (cf. les premières productions du bonhomme, telle ce « I’m Yours » en reggae mou de la sensualité mais charmeur par son indolence).
Mais, élevé à la puissance treize de chansons se nourrissant essentiellement de poncifs hippies et de déchirements immédiatement post-adolescents, le disque finit par se noyer dans le patchouli et pédaler dans le macramé. Et se résout in fine à n’offrir que le résultat insipide d’une pop de consommation courante, inoffensive et, pis que tout, jolie. Comme un Jack Johnson aux neurones considérablement endommagés par les rayons ultra-violets californiens, Jason Mraz chante des poncifs avec une tendre conviction et une franche naïveté qui effraient un peu. On pourra en outre se déclarer préoccupé qu’il vende ces chansonnettes par containers entiers.
Un constat plus douloureux encore, si l’on considère qu’il y a peu de temps on considérait le chanteur comme l’un des troubadours à plus fort potentiel de sa génération : pour concrétiser les espoirs mis en lui, il est définitivement temps que Mraz convienne de s’extraire de son hamac et siffle la fin de la sieste.
