Alors que le New Jack se transforme peu à peu en R&B, la démarche de Mint Condition surprend. Pas que Life's Aquarium soit dispensé de ballades collantes et nourricières, mais celle-ci ne sont qu'une partie d'un riche puzzle.
Des influences latinos ou jamaïcaines, au jazz, au funk, au rock, Mint Condition à un spectre musical étonnamment large. « Touch That Body » mêle saxophone jazz et basses bie
n grasses, « Be Like That Sometimes » rappelle par moments le son Stax, « If You Love Me » remplit sa fonction de tube.
« Spanish Eyes » part au Caraïbes, entre rythmes latins et percussions reggae, la ballade « Just the Man for You » révèle bien des richesses, des finesses d'orchestration qui font la différence. Le must de Life's Aquarium est curieusement le titre caché qui se trouve à la suite de « Leave Me Alone », gros son , gros funk, un groove et une tonalité que ne renierait pas Prince.
Album trop peu reconnu en dehors des Etats-Unis, Life's Aquarium mérite un arrêt plus que superficiel.
