Dès sa sortie, Late For Sky fût remarqué par sa belle illustration, inspirée par l’œuvre du peintre surréaliste Belge René Magritte, « l’empire des lumières », avec une calligraphie de Rick Griffin, l’illustrateur attitré du Grateful Dead et créateur de quelques uns des plus beaux posters californiens de la grande époque.
A l’écoute, il demeure de l’avis général, le meilleur album de son auteur. Il parvient n°4 aux Etats-Unis, se vend à plus d’un million de copies sur le territoire américain et est nommé pour un Grammy award l’année suivante (Still Crazy After All These Years de Paul Simon en est le lauréat). « Before The Deluge » domine le lot de huit longues chansons qu’il résume à lui seul, avec son évocation à demi cachée de la désillusion engendrée par le festival de Woodstock cinq ans auparavant. Romantique et poétique, idéaliste et imagé, il est la somme de ses expériences passées, l’absence de vraies racines, la misère et la drogue dans lesquels il vivait quelques années plus tôt.
« Fountain Of Sorrow » est tout aussi magnifique, utilisant ici aussi le thème de l’eau comme métaphore sexuelle, comme plus loin « The Road And The Sky ». Quant au mélancolique « Late For The Sky », Martin Scorsese l’utilisera abondamment en fond musical pour son film Taxi Driver trois ans plus tard.
