Ils étaient partis à cinq sur la route de la gloire et se retrouvent à trois vingt-quatre ans après. Tel pourrait être un résumé très succinct de la carrière de Take That. Entre temps les péripéties ont été nombreuses, parfois rythmées par les allers-retours du fantasque Robbie Williams qui a, cette fois, décliné l'invitation de ses camarades pour cause de paternité. Cette défection, pas plus que l'éviction de Jason Orange, n'ont visiblement traumatisé Take That au moment d'enregistrer III.
Le public britannique n'en a pas non plus tenu rigueur à ses favoris et a offert au groupe son septième numéro un local, soit sept sur sept albums sortis. Un témoignage d'amour qui risque de ne pas se propager sur toute la planète au vu du résultat de III en matière musicale. III est en effet majoritairement ancré dans les années 1990 et la dance pop qui irriguait les boys bands.
Une option rétro qui ne souffre que peu d'exceptions, « I Like It » et « Into the Wild » représentant les seules véritables incursions dans un style plus contemporain.
Le désormais trio a privilégié la sécurité d'un style ayant fait ses preuves comme en témoigne le single « These Days » qui est du Take That pur jus. Au rayon émotions, Take That se montre souverain avec un « Higher and Higher » fait pour enflammer les cœurs. III s'offre même une petite fantaisie avec le primesautier « Give You My Love », dont le ton joyeux en fait la chanson la plus agréable du lot. III est typiquement le genre d'album qui s'adresse aux convaincus de longue date, la qualité de la réalisation servant de paravent à un manque de renouvellement flagrant du répertoire du groupe.
