Le 21 octobre 2003, Elliott Smith se suicidait en s’infligeant deux coups de couteau. Une violence rare, insoupçonnable à l’écoute de ses disques, tout en douce mélancolie. Mais qui l’érigea malgré lui au rang des songwriters maudits et vénérés après leur mort. Régulièrement, un nouveau groupe, de New York à Paris, réhabilite son écriture et revendique sa paternité. Signe qu’Elliott Smith n’est pas mort, et qu’à l’image d’un Nick Drake, il a bouleversé toute une génération de musiciens… En 2014, le réalisateur Nickolas Rossi lui consacra un long documentaire, Heaven Adores You. Pour les aficionados du chanteur défunt, sa bande originale est une vraie malle aux trésors. Démos, live, instrumentaux, acoustiques, l’album regorge de pépites. © CM/Qobuz
