Beggars BanquetLet It BleedSticky Fingers et Exile on Main Street : entre 1968 et 1972, les Rolling Stones signent leurs plus grands disques. Un carré d’as qui chamboule l’histoire de la musique populaire du XXe siècle. Comment enchaîner après un tel âge d’or même lorsqu’on s’autoproclame plus grand groupe de rock’n’roll du monde ? Le tandem Jagger/Richards se roule alors plus que jamais dans la boue de tous les clichés du (rock) star-system et la presse se lèche les babines. Mick danse le tango avec les objectifs des paparazzis pendant que la consommation de cocaïne et d’héroïne de Keith atteint de nouveaux sommets, tout comme ses convocations au tribunal… Dans ce terreau malsain et décadent prend racine Goats Head Soup, essentiellement enregistré entre novembre 1972 et juin 1973 au Dynamic Sound Studio de Kingston en Jamaïque et que la pochette voilée photographiée par David Bailey résume assez bien. Une confusion qui s’entend jusque dans la production de Jimmy Miller, bordélique, pleine d’effets et finalement assez fascinante. C’est sans doute elle qui sauve ce disque bancal qui triomphera dans les charts grâce à son tubesque slow Angie. Peu de chansons de Goats Head Soup rivalisent avec tous les chefs-d’œuvre passés de Jagger et Richards. Mais l’attachante ballade Coming Down Again, le vénéneux Winter, le salement funky Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) blindé de guitares wah-wah ou le poilant Star Star, vraie fausse reprise de Chuck Berry initialement baptisée Starfucker, prouvent notamment que ces vicieux Stones ne sont pas encore tout secs, ni tout fripés. Au contraire.

Cette Deluxe Edition publiée en septembre 2020 propose une belle cargaison de bonus dont trois titres inédits (All the RageCriss Cross et surtout Scarlet, enregistré en octobre 1974 avec Jimmy Page en invité surprise) et un surpuissant live belge d’octobre 1973 (The Brussell Affair). © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
