Défenseur du plus britannique des heavy metal, groupe possédant un public fidèle et passionné, Iron Maiden avait encore un défi à relever avant de pouvoir se dire que tout (ou presque) avait été fait en matière de tournée pharaonique. Le challenge de la cuvée 2008 était le suivant : tout faire soi-même et se rendre où il n’avait guère été possible d’aller auparavant. Et quoi de mieux pour un tel pari qu’un Boeing 757 aux couleurs du groupe piloté par Bruce Dickinson en personne ?
Une équipe de 70 personnes et une dizaine de tonnes de matériel vont voir du pays en un temps record. Réalisé par Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn (déjà à l’origine du très bon Metal : Voyage au coeur de la bête), Flight 666 permet de découvrir cet incroyable périple de 24 jours aux cours desquels les Anglais effectueront 23 concerts sur les 5 continents, n’hésitant pas à poser leurs valises là où il était soi-disant inconcevable de jouer il y a quelques années encore (Mubai en Inde, San Jose au Costa Rica…).
Un documentaire où la formation se livre sans frime ni poses inutiles, joue au foot face aux équipes locales composées de potes musiciens rendant au passage ses membres encore plus humains et attachants. Car si Maiden est une machine de scène déployant tout ce que l’on peut imaginer en matière de light show et autres effets pyrotechniques, il reste avant tout un groupe proche de ses fans. On ne remplit pas des stades dans le Monde entier sans raison.
Flight 666 vient prouver une fois encore qu’après plus de 30 ans de carrière, des musiciens ayant su restés simples en dehors de la scène auront toujours droit au meilleur des publics et à une ferveur qui semble ne jamais vouloir retomber.
