Pas un mais deux albums ! Les Foals reviennent après quatre ans d'absence et le rouleau compresseur What Went Down pour public élargi. Une page se tourne pour la bande de Yannis Philippakis, dont l’eau bénite math rock commençait, tout de même, à se tarir. Par peur d’ankyloser le fan avec un double album, le quartet d'Oxford a choisi de sortir au printemps un premier volume, complété à l'automne. S'il n'a pas la frappe de son prédécesseur, Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Part 1 reste un morceau de rock puissant, adepte des crescendos (Exits, White Onions, Syrups), comme ces bêtes de scène – passées de 5 à 4 – savent en découper. Le départ du bassiste Walter Gervers, parti pour d’autres aventures aidant, Foals a choisi d’édulcorer son propos. Au-delà de doléances sur une planète rendue obsolescente, Philippakis récupère pour la première fois la production. Le leader charismatique mixe de nouvelles textures, émaillées avant tout de beats électro taillés pour les stades (Moonlight, In Degrees), de mélodies percussives (Cafe d’Athens, rappelant le In Rainbow de Radiohead), mais aussi des balades au piano introspectives (I’m Done With the World (& It’s Done With Me)).
