S’il creuse habilement le sillon synthétique de son prédécesseur (mais en utilisant trop souvent cette technologie alors de pointe pour dissimuler une absence d’inspiration patente), ce deuxième album de Devo, conséquence de la faiblesse des chansons par rapport à la précédente livraison, est une déception.
La surprise de la découverte s’est égarée en route, et il ne reste, parfois, que l’expression maîtrisée d’un indéniable savoir-faire. L’allusion ironique au film Rollerball («Devo Corporate Anthem ») tourne à vide, à l’instar (enfin…presque…) des douze autres pièces proposées. Á telle enseigne que le groupe est contraint de se rabattre sur le « Secret Agent Man » de P.F. Sloan (immortalisé en 1965 par Johnny Rivers) pour retenir l’attention, sans toutefois apporter la moindre once d’humour à cette reprise.
Le producteur Ken Scott (David Bowie, Supertramp) propose le travail qui convient, sans ajouter la moindre brillance aux mélodies. Plus gênant, une chanson comme « Triumph of the Will » épingle sur un mode satirique les régimes totalitaires en général, et le fascisme en particulier, sans préciser plus avant l’éventuelle volonté des musiciens de s’en démarquer. Tout ceci ne fait pas de Duty Now…un album médiocre, mais à coup sûr dispensable.
