Deux cinéastes ont évidemment une place prépondérante dans Dream Songs, nouvelle compilation de thèmes et suites signés du Japonais Joe Hisaishi et interprétés par des orchestres symphoniques (London Symphony Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic World Dream Orchestra), mais aussi des formations plus réduites (Joe Hisaishi Ensemble), jusqu’au piano solo pour certaines plages. On trouvera tout d’abord des œuvres tirées de films réalisés par l’un de ses metteurs en scène fétiche, Takeshi Kitano : le minimaliste – mais néanmoins lyrique – Sonatine, le très enlevé Kids Return, les mélancoliques Brother et Hana Bi, ou encore le thème principal de A Scene at the Sea. Cette dernière BO est assez typique du style Hisaishi, lequel est très souvent constitué de mélodies sucrées et innocentes, avec un arrière-plan nostalgique et une sensibilité à fleur de peau. L’autre grand complice du Maestro Hisaishi se nomme Hayao Miyazaki, et c’est lui aussi l’un des piliers de Dream Songs. Plusieurs films d’animation cultes du cinéaste figurent dans cette compilation, comme le poème symphonique tiré de la BO de Nausicaä (aux couleurs arabo-andalouses), la danse frénétique de Porco Rosso (Madness), et bien entendu les incontournables Princesse Mononoké, Le Château dans le ciel et Mon Voisin Totoro. Miyazaki et Kitano sont tellement indissociables de l’œuvre de Joe Hisaishi qu’on oublierait presque que ce dernier a également travaillé avec d’autres cinéastes, comme Yojiro Takita (Departures) ou Nobuhiko Obayashi. Connu pour ses films sur le passage de l’enfance à l’âge adulte – parfois mâtinés d’un certain surréalisme – Obayashi possède un univers qui s’accorde lui aussi idéalement à celui d'Hisaishi. A la fois épique, espiègle, onirique et profondément lyrique, Water Traveler présente en huit minutes toutes les facettes de l’expression musicale de Joe Hisaishi. Ce thème est tiré de Samurai Kids, un film de Obayashi de 1993.
