Trois semaines seulement après sa sortie, Double Fantasy bénéficie malheureusement de la meilleure des pires publicités : l’assassinat de John Lennon. En quelques jours, il plafonne au sommet des charts aux quatre coins du monde, porté par ses tubesques singles (Just Like) Starting Over et Woman, deux des plus belles chansons de Lennon. Premier album publié avec Yoko Ono depuis cinq ans, ce disque étonnant, en plus d’être le dernier de son (co) auteur, marque un tournant dans la carrière solo de l’ancien Beatles. La politique et l’engagement s’éclipsent au profit de thématiques plus personnelles voire plus introspectives. Et l’expérimental côtoie le commercial dans une sorte d’harmonie magique.
