La pluie de rééditions Bowie continue et ce coffret nous propose un voyage dans le temps en 1971, pour explorer les 12 mois qui ont précédé la sortie de Hunky Dory, son quatrième album studio. L’Anglais vient de finir la tournée de The Man Who Sold the World et replonge immédiatement dans la composition, toujours ultra-inspiré. Le niveau de l’album est d’ailleurs, vu du XXIe siècle, assez sidérant, entre les deux singles cultes Changes et Life on Mars?, les hommages à Dylan, Warhol et Lou Reed – sur Queen Bitch et sa guitare stoogienne –, sans oublier Oh! You Pretty Things, Kooks ou Quicksand, moins médiatisés mais tout aussi aboutis. C’est donc comme dans un musée qu’on visite les quatre salles de cette rétrospective d’un Bowie au sommet de son art – ou presque, si l’on considère que Ziggy Stardust arrive un an plus tard…

Le premier disque expose une quinzaine de démos de l’album, en solo guitare, piano ou en groupe, qui permettent de se rendre compte de la force du songwriting de Bowie, qui n’avait besoin d’aucun artifice pour toucher au cœur ou pour déchaîner le dancefloor, comme le prouve cette version en son clair de Queen Bitch. C’est d’ailleurs ce même titre, dans une version légèrement downtempo, qui ouvre le CD2, qui, comme le 3, compile une série de performances live, données, entre autres, à la BBC pour le show John Peel in Concert. On entend les morceaux à venir de Hunky Dory mais aussi des titres comme The Supermen, extrait de The Man Who Sold the World, ou une jolie version de Space Oddity enregistrée au fameux club Friars, à Aylesbury, dans le nord-ouest de Londres, en septembre 1971 avec une douze cordes et un Bowie blagueur. Autour de lui, on trouve les futurs Spiders From Mars, Mick Ronson (guitare), Trevor Bolder (basse) et Woody Woodmansey (batterie).

Le concert se termine par une nouvelle version du hit de Lou Reed Waiting for the Man, qui hante chaque recoin de cette rétrospective. Enfin, le CD 4 est l’œuvre de Ken Scott, qui a coproduit Hunky Dory avec Bowie – crédité ici en tant que “The Actor (aka David Bowie)”. Le disque propose quelques early et alternative mix et surtout des versions remastérisées toutes propres pour terminer ce grand tour dans la mémoire du Thin White Duke. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz

La pluie de rééditions Bowie continue et ce coffret nous propose un voyage dans le temps en 1971, pour explorer les 12 mois qui ont précédé la sortie de Hunky Dory, son quatrième album studio. L’Anglais vient de finir la tournée de The Man Who Sold the World et replonge immédiatement dans la composition, toujours ultra-inspiré. Le niveau de l’album est d’ailleurs, vu du XXIe siècle, assez sidérant, entre les deux singles cultes Changes et Life on Mars?, les hommages à Dylan, Warhol et Lou Reed – sur Queen Bitch et sa guitare stoogienne –, sans oublier Oh! You Pretty Things, Kooks ou Quicksand, moins médiatisés mais tout aussi aboutis. C’est donc comme dans un musée qu’on visite les quatre salles de cette rétrospective d’un Bowie au sommet de son art – ou presque, si l’on considère que Ziggy Stardust arrive un an plus tard…

Le premier disque expose une quinzaine de démos de l’album, en solo guitare, piano ou en groupe, qui permettent de se rendre compte de la force du songwriting de Bowie, qui n’avait besoin d’aucun artifice pour toucher au cœur ou pour déchaîner le dancefloor, comme le prouve cette version en son clair de Queen Bitch. C’est d’ailleurs ce même titre, dans une version légèrement downtempo, qui ouvre le CD2, qui, comme le 3, compile une série de performances live, données, entre autres, à la BBC pour le show John Peel in Concert. On entend les morceaux à venir de Hunky Dory mais aussi des titres comme The Supermen, extrait de The Man Who Sold the World, ou une jolie version de Space Oddity enregistrée au fameux club Friars, à Aylesbury, dans le nord-ouest de Londres, en septembre 1971 avec une douze cordes et un Bowie blagueur. Autour de lui, on trouve les futurs Spiders From Mars, Mick Ronson (guitare), Trevor Bolder (basse) et Woody Woodmansey (batterie).

Le concert se termine par une nouvelle version du hit de Lou Reed Waiting for the Man, qui hante chaque recoin de cette rétrospective. Enfin, le CD 4 est l’œuvre de Ken Scott, qui a coproduit Hunky Dory avec Bowie – crédité ici en tant que “The Actor (aka David Bowie)”. Le disque propose quelques early et alternative mix et surtout des versions remastérisées toutes propres pour terminer ce grand tour dans la mémoire du Thin White Duke. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
