Après s’être fait un nom aux commandes des Sugarcubes qui tentèrent de croiser les B-52’s, Cocteau Twins, Killing Joke, Depeche Mode et 6 589 autres influences, Björk Guðmundsdóttir se lance (pour de bon) en solo – elle avait publié un premier disque à 11 ans – avec un album éclectique porté par son inimitable voix d’elfe et qui paraît en juillet 1993. Electro minimaliste (Crying), new wave climatique (Human Behaviour), ballade onirique (Venus as a Boy), house hédoniste (There’s More to Life Than This) et relecture de Broadway (le standard Like Someone in Love), tout y passe, cimenté par ce chant élastique venu d’une autre planète, capable de rugissements féroces comme de cris d’enfant ébahis.
