Bien qu’un peu vieilli aujourd’hui, il est le premier album de rock progressif de l’histoire, le terme employé alors étant « art rock ». La reconversion des Moody Blues est spectaculaire et inattendue. Avant les autres, les musiciens s’entourent d’un orchestre classique, le London Festival Orchestra, pour les interludes entre des ballades harmoniquement ambitieuses, éthérées grâce à l’utilisation de la réverbération déjà. Les duos claviers (Mike Pinder) et flûte (Ray Thomas), les harmonies vocales (les cinq musiciens chantent) et les nappes de mellotron, instrument que Mike Pinder avait contribué à élaborer, deviennent la marque de fabrique de la formation. Le point culminant de ce concept album est bien sûr le classique de Justin Hayward écrit quand il avait encore dix neuf ans, la chanson d’amour « Nights In White Satin », longue pièce élaborée de plus de sept minutes qui demeure l’un des grands « slows » de l’histoire du rock, disque fétiche des dj’s de l’hiver 1967. Ecourtée une première fois à trois minutes pour le 45 tours, elle ne bouleverse pas la Grande-Bretagne et pas du tout le marché américain, mais elle est en France l’un des quatre grands tubes de mai 1968. Ré-éditée en 1972, ces deux premiers territoires lui rendront alors justice. « Nights In White Satin » a souvent été repris, notamment par Eric Burdon & War, Nancy Sinatra, les Dickies, Alain Bashung et… Dalida.
