Dans leur premier album énergique et assuré, Costello Music, The Fratellis offrent un ensemble délicieusement espiègle de britpop où les guitares ont la part belle. Tels des cousins chahuteurs des Kooks, ces Écossais puisent clairement leur inspiration dans les icônes glamour des années 70 telles que Marc Bolan et David Bowie (cf. le côté rentre-dedans de "Flathead" digne de T. Rex et le martèlement de "Chelsea Dagger"), mais s’aventurent également dans des comptines saugrenues rappelant les Beatles (notamment dans la joyeuse "Vince the Lovable Stoner"), prouvant qu’ils ne se cantonnent pas à une approche particulière. Costello Music serait la bande son parfaite d’une soirée de tournée des bars.
