Avec ce troisième album, le quatuor venu de Californie lançait en 2003 un avis aux intéressés : le Riot grrrl n'est pas mort ! Tatouages et piercings remplacent la crête qu'arborait fièrement Brody Armstrong Dalle, au début de The Distillers, mais l'évolution musicale du groupe de punk-rock, intimement liée à la vie sentimentale de sa bouillonnante chanteuse, atteint ici un potentiel nouveau et vraiment réjouissant. Produit par Gil Norton (Foo Fighters, Pixies...) il s'agit du meilleur album du groupe.
Une telle femme à poigne aux commandes, l'histoire de The Distillers rappelle forcement celle de Hole, d'autant que, objectivement, la voix de Dalle couvre presque exactement le même terrain d'expression que celle de la veuve Cobain. Justement, à peine divorcée de son ancien mentor, Tim Armstrong leader du groupe Rancid, la chanteuse de The Distillers affirme son indépendance grâce à un nom de scène sulfureux à souhait, Dalle (en hommage à une actrice bien de chez nous), et livre en pâture ses récents tourments dans cet album, qui prend des allures de purgatoire amoureux (« Dismantle Me », « The Gallow is God », « Love Is Paranoid »).
Mais malheureusement, de même que la noirceur de Life Throught This constituait le dernier cocktail détonant grunge et punk rock de Love (l'album Celebrity Skin s'orientant vers une power-pop d'autre acabit) ce jet de sang couleur corail, sera le dernier album de la formation de Dalle, entourée ici du guitariste Tony Bradley, Ryan Sinn, Andy Granelli. Elle se plaçait en digne héritière, parfois brouillonne (« Deathsex ») ou manquant d'originalité (« Beat Your Heart Out »), mais sacrément salvatrice.
