Depuis 2016 et son quatrième album Views, Drake a changé de dimension et de direction artistique. Recherchant le coup musical, souvent avec brio, se permettant de faire éclore toutes ses influences sur sa mixtape More Life en 2017 ou divisant la critique avec Dark Lane Demo Tapes en 2020, le voici qui renoue avec ses premières amours. Certified Lover Boy est frontal, gargantuesque en termes de lyrics. Car Drake a des choses à dire. À commencer par régler ses comptes avec Kanye West ou avec l’industrie. Mais après la tempête, il y a le calme, comme avec les titres Pipe Down ou 7am on a Bridle Path, ces moments où le Canadien sait laisser de côté le discursif pour enfin se faire plaisir. Et pour explorer ce qu’il sait faire de mieux. Sur les premiers titres tels que Champagne Theory ou Papi’s Home, Drake a superbement placé Certified Lover Boy sous le prisme du sampling. Mais ce n’est qu’une mise en bouche. Car lorsqu’il convoque Metro Boomin à la production de Knife Talk ou les trap boss Future et Young Thug sur Way 2 Sexy, il va à l’essentiel, regarde vers l’avant et fait de cet album l’une de ses meilleures sorties depuis 2015. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
