Enregistré dans un studio de Tittenhurst Park, résidence du batteur des Beatles Ringo Starr (mais le paramètre musical s'arrête là), le sixième album de Judas Priest consacre la levée d'un triomphal coup de poker, ou comment générer un succès mondial en imposant des canons esthétiques - musique violente, survitaminée, et totalement en sur régime - et des détails de marketing (les grosses motos, les blousons de cuir clouté), qui permettent à la fois une reconnaissance identitaire immédiate, et à la fois l'adhésion - non moins immédiate - du plus grand nombre.
Le batteur Les Binks a laissé le tabouret à Dave Holland, sans bouleversements notables dans la sonorité du groupe. Les chansons (toutes désormais composées par le trio Downing, Halford, et Tipton) sont ici les plus immédiates du répertoire des empereurs du heavy metal, instantanément génératrices d'excitation, plus simples, et plus courtes. En ouverture du programme, « Breaking The Law » et son refrain addictif, ou la course haletante de « Rapid Fire » resteront comme des classiques du groupe. Et « Metal Gods » (les dieux du métal) sera utilisé par les fans comme surnom de leur combo favori.
La version américaine de l'album déroulera un couplage de titres différents, et l'édition remastérisée de 2001 offrira deux pièces inédites. Les singles « Leaving After Midnight » et « Breaking The Law » seront des hits irrépressibles au Royaume-Uni, et l'album British Steel parviendra à la trente-quatrième place des charts américains (une première pour les Britanniques), et sera certifié disque de platine.
