Plus ou moins contemporain de Gluck, William Boyce vécut et travailla à Oxford, Cambridge puis Londres où sa carrière fut couronnée d’une nomination comme Maître de la musique royale puis organiste à la chapelle royale. Il se retira plus ou moins de la vie musicale vers 1758 pour cause de surdité toujours plus prononcée, et passa encore les vingt dernières années de sa vie à éditer les œuvres de Purcell ou Byrd. On lui connaît une bonne cinquantaine d’odes, genre typiquement anglais ; dont cette Ode pour sainte Cécile qui semble dater de 1739, alors qu’il n’avait pas encore atteint la trentaine mais était manifestement en possession de tous ses moyens. Si d’aucuns croiront entendre des tournures à la Haendel, en particulier ceux de ses grands oratorios, on fera remarquer que cette ode est bien antérieure à tout ce qu’avait alors écrit Haendel dans le même genre ! Tiens tiens… Une influence réelle, par contre, est celle des accents pastoraux de la musique de campagne anglaise, que souligne souvent une douce ligne de flûte. Voilà une musique élégante toujours, délicate et grandiose tour à tout – les Anglais ont le chic pour tout ce qui est parfois un brin pompeux ! –, magnifiquement servie par le Hanover Band, le chœur du New College d’Oxford et les solistes, le tout sous la baguette alerte et précise de Graham Lea-Cox. Un album exemplaire, qui met l’interprétation de ce compositeur trop négligé au niveau d’excellence de ses plus illustres contemporains. © SM/Qobuz
