Deux ans après l'irréprochable Cole World: The Sideline Story, J. Cole confirme son statut de plus sûr espoir du rap américain. Loin de se laisser griser et de recourir à de multiple producteurs en vogue et autres featurings de noms ronflants, voilà un artiste qui s'est donné la peine de composer et produire la quasi intégralité de son deuxième disque. La méthode retenue n'est pas la seule à être excellente, Born Sinner étant en tous points brillant.
Les quelques participations sont triées sur le volet, de Miguel qui vient illuminer le chantant « Power Trip », à Kendrick Lamar parfait sur le jazzy « Forbidden Fruit » qui sonne comme du Jungle Brothers, à la présence inattendue d'Amber Coffman dont la voix cristalline noyée de filtres accompagne « She Knows », rien n'est gratuit ni superflu sur Born Sinner.
Ces quelques exemples montrent combien J. Cole sait varier les plaisirs sur un album exemplaire. Tout comme l'est l'utilisation du sample de « Juicy » de Notorious B.I.G. sur le « Villuminati » qui débute le disque. Il n'y a décidément rien à jeter sur Born Sinner, avec un « Land of the Snakes » aux breakbeats soutenus par des percussions, sans négliger « Crooked Smile » avec TLC qui croise parfaitement rap et R&B.
L'élève marche sur les traces du maître, et Jay-Z peut se réjouir d'avoir signé un tel talent sur son label Roc Nation. Born Sinner est un grand album, capable d'attendrir les fanas du hip-hop originel comme les amateurs du rap le plus actuel. Un disque déjà indémodable.
