Pour de nombreux artistes, l’élection de Donald Trump a eu un impact lourd de sens. Il fallait agir, peu importe l’échelle ou l’envergure du projet. Pour le compositeur Gabriel Kahane, cette réaction a été immédiate. Le lendemain de l’élection, il fait son sac et entame un voyage en train dans un but simple et humaniste : faire des rencontres. Une chasse à l’inspiration sur 8 980 miles débute et donne naissance à l’album Book of Travelers. Un voyage de treize jours retracé à travers les personnes rencontrées par Kahane et leurs histoires. Ce disque « journal » de onze chansons est un reflet à petite échelle de l’Amérique. Faisant défiler les profils et les histoires, on dépasse le stade même de la chanson pour s’aventurer dans une sorte d’album théâtral, où l’unique personnage sur scène est un bonimenteur. Compositions classiques au piano, la voix lisse et angélique de Gabriel prône une méditation personnelle, une ouverture au monde et aux autres. Pour son premier album chez Nonesuch, le Californien, comparé parfois à Rufus Wainwright et Sufjan Stevens, joue la carte de la sincérité, des tragédies calmes et des moments heureux sans artifices. Il incorpore quelques histoires personnelles aussi, comme la fuite de sa grand-mère de l’Allemagne nazie vers les Etats-Unis sur October 1, 1939. Sur ce piano préparé au poids de ces contes, l’intimité de ces vies est dignement respectée par le jeu de Kahane et l’écoute attentive. © Anna Coluthe/Qobuz
