Si on lui avait dit ça, il y a dix ans, Jack aurait rit. Jaune, sans doute. Le lonesome boy biberonné au blues, cantonné à l’analogique, verse pour la première fois dans un album synthétique. Pressentie ces dernières années dans ses collaborations, cette volte au milieu de sa percée en solitaire reste étonnante. A côté des riffs de blues, White, du haut de ses 42 ans, articule son premier vocabulaire croisé. Et ce langage conjugué à l’aube 2018 argumente à la perfection. Eclaboussures rock (Respect Commander), jam sessions turbulentes (Ice Station Zebra), congas et percussions pour rythmes afro-cubains brisés sur des saillies numériques (Over and Over and Over, Everything’s You’ve ever Learned), envolées gospel sur échappées d’orgue avec les McCrary Sisters de Nashville (Connected by Love), country attendrie au piano (What’s done is done), interlude chambriste avec C.W. Stoneking (Abulia and Akrusia), vocodeur pour miniature funk (Get In The Mind Shaft), paroles d’Al Capone écrites à Alcatraz déposées sur l’Humoresque de Dvořák façon jazz, tout y passe.
Pour ce saut dans l’inconnu, l’ancien Stripes a pris soin de se détacher. De s’en foutre. De prendre tous les risques. D’abord il s’est planqué des mois solo dans un studio loué à Nashville, hors des murs bien construits de Third Man Records, pour écrire d’abord sans instrument, tâter les touches de synthés, tout en enregistrant sur bandes. Puis, a filé s’enfermer à New-York et Los Angeles avec Carla Azar d’Autolux, Louis Cato, Justin Poree et Bobby Allende, ceux qui jouent pour Kendrick Lamar et font la crème du hip-hop. Des musiciens avec qui il n'avait encore jamais travaillé. Jack : “Certains morceaux pouvaient faire toute une face, un peu comme Miles Davis à sa période Funkadelic. Et puis dès qu’un autre musicien s’y mettait, ça changeait tout, toute l’ambiance musicale.” Toujours hors de sa zone, White, qui aime capter la brutalité d’un son vif, sale et encore palpitant, né dans la sueur, a choisi de retravailler à L.A. les enregistrements à froid.
