Fats Domino, sous l’angle moins exposé du blues de La Nouvelle-Orléans (voix impeccable, piano impérial, et orchestre aussi à l’aise dans quelques fondamentaux de la jump music, qu’au sein du funk le plus torride) réserve encore quelques merveilleuses surprises.

En effet, sans renier les grands succès du bonhomme (après tout, gagner des sous en chantant « Blueberrry Hill » ou « Ain’t That a Shame » n’a rien de blâmable), Blues Kingpins offre un artiste au plus près de ses racines (on dirait par ici de son terroir), et c’est comme un délicieux fumet de cuisine créole qui s’échappe de l’album.

En dix-huit chansons, enregistrées à la toute fin des années quarante, mais déjà secondé par le compère Dave Bartholomew (et les musiciens qu’il a rassemblés à ses côtés), Domino chante merveilleusement bien (« Hide Away Blues »
), compose de même (« Rockin’ Chair »), et joue du piano dans une grâce hystérique qui n’appartient qu’à lui. On dira que c’est du blues, et que c’est vraiment la musique qu’on aime.
