Deux ans que The Cure n’avait pas donné de concert au Royaume-Uni. De retour sur l’île de Wight en septembre 2011 pour le Bestival, le groupe de Robert Smith décide d’immortaliser ce show, au bénéfice de The Isle of Wight Youth Trust...
Ce qui frappe tout d’abord dans ce live de The Cure, c’est la qualité du son, qui donne l’impression que le show a été enregistré dans une petite salle, ce qui est loin d’être le cas. Après l’ouverture sur « Plainsong », tout en douceur et en musicalité évanescente, The Cure balance ses titres avec une maîtrise hallucinante mais jamais aseptisée pour un groupe de cette expérience. « A Night Like This » atteint des sommets, entre noirceur et vélocité, et toujours cette rythmique tendue et cette guitare qui semble surfer sur la voix d’un Robert Smith qui n’a pas troqué son bel organe contre le temps qui passe.
Oui, en 2011, The Cure est un groupe de jeunes hommes prêts à en découdre avec le public intransigeant du Bestival. L’un des climax du concert se situe évidemment lors de « Just Like Heaven », avec bien sûr cette énorme basse intemporelle, ce clavier intergénérationnel et cette justesse absolue chez Robert Smith. Moment épique pour l’un des plus grands morceaux de l’histoire.
La suite ne faiblit pas : « Lullaby », « A Forest », « Boys Don’t Cry », « The Lovecats » se déploient dans une fluidité tout « Curiste », tels des hymnes qui ne tombent jamais dans l’anachronisme. Un grand moment.
