Premier album solo d’un Ice Cube très remonté contre Jerry Heller et le rappeur Eazy-E, co-fondateurs du label Ruthless Records, sur lequel sont distribués les albums de N.W.A..
En 1989, Ice Cube quittait en effet le groupe, pour des questions de droits d’auteur, qu’il voulait voir réévaluer à la hausse – ce qui lui a été refusé. Amer, N.W.A. crache son venin contre le rappeur en allé, sur l’EP 100 Miles and Runnin'. En réponse, Ice Cube s’en prend aux deux principaux intéressés susmentionnés, sans les nommer, dans l’intro de « Turn Off Your Radio ». Le groupe le lui rendra bien par la suite (avec l’album Efil4zaggin, qui paraît l’année suivante), jusqu’au moment où ses membres s’apercevront qu’Ice Cube avait raison.
Le titre de l’album, AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted annonce le pavé dans la mare. Détournant le titre d’une émission américaine (America’s Most Wanted), visant à aider la police à retrouver des hors-la-loi, Ice Cube y insère un « KKK », acronyme du Ku Klux Klan (société secrète prônant la supériorité de la race blanche), dénonçant ainsi une Amérique raciste. Ce que confirment les textes de l’album, dans lesquels le rappeur se met en scène pour ancrer sa dénonciation dans la réalité. Il y devance la sordide affaire Rodney King, avec « Endangered Species » ou dénonce des médias qui ne s’intéressent qu’aux crimes touchant la population blanche sur le morceau-titre.
Tout au long de l’album, il se montre particulièrement virulent sur une frange de la communauté noire qu’il considère comme coupable de trahison, voulant à tout prix sa part du rêve américain, quitte à travestir sa culture. Il évoque également une jeunesse noire en manque de repères avec « Once Upon a Time in the Projects ». La mise en musique du Bomb Squad (qui a produit Public Enemy, dont les rappeurs Flavor Flav et Chuck D. apparaissent ici chacun pour un duo) est le parfait complément à la rage d’Ice Cube. L’album se vent à 500 000 copies en une semaine, sans vidéo à l’appui, et recueille le fameux sésame de 5 micros dans The Source.
