En boubou africain sur les photos de pochette (et l’air matois), Aretha Franklin explique une chose élémentaire : le chemin du temple, c’est comme le vélo, cela ne s’oublie pas. On peut supposer qu’Amazing Grace offre lors de sa commercialisation une réponse empreinte de ferveur aux doutes qui assaillent alors la chanteuse, quant au devenir de sa carrière. Et que le retour aux fondamentaux (après tout, le gospel reste ce qui a nourri la petite fille, lorsqu’elle grandissait aux côtés de son pasteur de père) édifie le plus efficient des boucliers face à l’adversité, et aux turbulences de la course du monde.

Amazing Grace est donc un album de gospel, enregistré en public. Sur scène, et pour seconder la star, il y a, outre le Southern California Community Choir du Reverend James Cleveland, quelques fidèles compagnons de la dame, comme le guitariste Cornell Dupree, Chuck Rainey et sa basse magique, ou la batterie de Bernard « Pretty » Purdie. Et dans la salle, il y a le papa, tant aimé, et admiré. Le répertoire, harmonieusement composé de chants traditionnels, ou d’immortels standards (« You’ll Never Walk Alone » d’Hammerstein et Rodgers, et, bien évidemment, « Amazing Grace ») est interprété comme on s’installe à une tablée d’amis : avec conviction, et tendresse. Et puis, il y a le souffle. Ce souffle qui propulse ce double album (dans l’édition originale) vers les sommets d’une force liturgique, et œcuménique, et délicieusement séductrice encore. Naturellement, et croyant ou pas, on tape dans ses mains, puisque ce sont des anges qui se donnent en spectacle.

Certains fous considèrent qu’Amazing Grace reste comme le plus bel album jamais enregistré par Aretha Franklin. Rappelons que, parfois, ce sont les fous qui ont raison. L’album atteignit la deuxième place des charts de musique noire, et, assez logiquement, se vit gratifier du Grammy Award de la « Meilleure performance féminine soul et gospel » de l’année.
