Après avoir réduit The Orb, groupe pionnier de la première vague électronique anglaise, à un projet solo, Alex Paterson a retrouvé l’amour du featuring sur No Sounds Are out of Bounds, album paru en 2018 (avec Roger Eno, Hollie Cook ou Jah Wobble), sur lequel il disait retrouver le format collaboratif du séminal Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld (1991). Après deux disques plutôt techno pour Kompakt, Abolition of the Royal Familia, son 16e album, est lié à son prédécesseur immédiat, avec le retour de Roger Eno, et la promotion de Michael Rendall, jusqu’ici musicien de tournée, à la production (pour l’anecdote, Rendall a aussi travaillé par le passé avec Eno et Cook).

Alors il y a bien un thème – la critique du soutien de la famille royale au trafic d’opium en Inde au XVIIIe et XIXe siècles – mais ça n’empêche pas The Orb de vadrouiller dans tous les sens et tous les styles, avec son raffinement habituel. L’album commence sur de la house, de moins en moins contemplative (Daze), et de plus en plus dark et uptempo (House of Narcotics et l’hommage à Stephen Hawking, fan du groupe, le clubby Hawk Kings), avant de louvoyer entre ambient (Pervitinn, une audiodescription robotisée de la pyramide de Khéops en français et en allemand), dub (Say Cheese et Ital Orb), ou drum’n’bass à la Goldie (The Queen of Hearts). Le disque s’achève sur le prophétique Slave Till U Die No Matter What U Buy, rythmé par une voix dictatoriale qui interdit les rassemblements de plus de deux personnes.
