About Playlist
“The difference between the Stranglers and all other punk bands was him!” wrote Hugh Cornell (singer-dancer of the influential English band from 1974-1990) on his Facebook page, paying tribute to his former sidekick Dave Greenfield who died of Covid-19 on May 3rd, 2020, at the age of 71, and perfectly summing up the singularity and originality of the Stranglers’ story. These synthesizers, pianos, organs, harpsichords and other keyboards operated with gun by Greenfield are truly the backbone of the sound of the quartet, also comprised of drummer Jet Black and Franco-British karate bassist Jean Jacques Burnel, born in Guildford, Surrey, in 1974.
Capable of the most virulent post punk as well as baroque ballads, the Stranglers shocked in their sounds as well as in their words. They musically gifted misogynists and brawlers who didn’t mingle with the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Damned or the Buzzcocks. Journalists sequestered in closets, strippers in on-stage cages, general brawls (a legendary concert in 1980 Nice resulting in the arrest and imprisonment of the band) or targeted attacks (Burnel smashing his bass over the head of Fuck, a Parisian punk figure in the front row of a concert at the Mutualité in 1983); The Stranglers dared to do just about anything. In 1982, the hit single “Golden Brown,” which glorified the heroin(e) to a waltz tune (where Greenfield is once again central) gave them an unexpected and offbeat international fame, a far cry from the anti-group anthem “London Lady” of 1977. After Cornwell’s departure in 1990, the others restarted the machine episodically with a fluctuating line-up. Nevertheless, this 1977 - 1990 period was the most creative period for these Stranglers, who would never have sounded like this without Dave Greenfield.
