About Playlist
Even if you don't know his name, you know his songs: J.D. Souther is a hero of the Laurel Canyon country-rock sound that made the Eagles famous. His late '60s collaboration with Glenn Frey in the short-lived LA folk duo Longbranch Pennywhistle helped establish the roots of the scene. Frey, of course, went on to co-found the Eagles—who had big hits with songs written or co-written by Souther, including "Best of My Love," "Heartache Tonight" and "New Kid in Town," low-key versions of which the singer-songwriter released on 2011's Natural History. His songs have also been recorded by Bonnie Raitt, George Strait, the Dixie Chicks, Don Henley and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Souther also teamed up with the Byrds' Chris Hillman and Richie Furay of Buffalo Springfield for a couple albums. But few have had as vital a connection to his music as former girlfriend Linda Ronstadt. Besides frequently covering the Souther's songs—"Faithless Love," "Prisoners in Disguise"—she's joined him for several heart-tugging duets. At its best, Souther's music nods to his Texas roots: inspired by romantic border-town sounds as well as the swooning bravado of fellow statesman Roy Orbison—nowhere better than on his 1979 solo hit, "You're Only Lonely."
