About Playlist
Since her early breakthrough harmonizing with Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris has been a one of a kind shooting star for nearly 50 years—respecting tradition while never following the traditional paths of country and bluegrass music. First and foremost: The purity of her voice is unparalleled. A generous collaborator, she's a chameleon who can brilliantly blend that voice with those of Linda Ronstadt (a frequent musical companion, whether it's the two of them duetting or joining with Dolly Parton for the lauded Trio albums), the Band, Neil Young, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and more. In her hands, covers of "male" songs "Pancho & Lefty" (Townes Van Zandt), "Hot Burrito #2" (the Flying Burrito Brothers) and "Jambalaya" (Hank Williams) take on an aloft, golden lightness. And while the bulk of her work tends to lean toward songs written by others, she's written so many gorgeous, distinctive songs: including the rollicking and twangy "Heartbreak Hill," the crystalline "Gold," and "Boulder to Birmingham" and "The Road," her tributes to Parsons.
