Bill Monroe is said to be the "father of bluegrass," and Jimmy Martin was known as the "king" of the genre. And while the music sounds as old as the Appalachian hills as it came out of, bluegrass by that name is actually not even a century old yet. (Naming rights go to Monroe and his band The Blue Grass Boys.) This playlist honors both Monroe and Martin in a big way, as well as their peers like Ralph Stanley and, moving into the middle of the 20th century, Flatt & Scruggs, Hazel Dickens, Doc Watson and the Osborne Brothers. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s 1972 revival—with Martin on a spirited version of "Tennessee Stud"—is present, as is flamekeeper Tony Rice. There are risk takers like Rhiannon Giddens, the Punch Brothers and Béla Fleck, true-blue country stars such as The Chicks and Dolly Parton and, of course, new star Billy Strings. And amidst all that fiddle and banjo, you’ll find plenty of songbirds, from Alison Krauss to Patty Loveless, Molly Tuttle and Claire Lynch.
