The Choir of Chichester Cathedral, which here makes its first recording for the Regent label, has an entirely distinctive sound, with 14 boy trebles against just pairs of (male) altos, tenors, and basses. The large group of boy singers, as compared with those of other cathedral choirs that use boys, produces a meaty texture with intonation that hangs out just slightly on the lower side of the pitch. One can sample anywhere to gauge one's reactions to the results, but director Charles Harrison instills a strong sense of focus on the texts in the young choristers, and this is to great benefit in the direct, text-centered music of Thomas Weelkes. A Morning Service and Evening Service are included, but where Weelkes, and the choir, really excel is in the short Anglican anthems, some of which have been reconstructed. Sample the exuberant All people, clap your hands for an idea. There are also pieces for organ and, more unusually, viol consort; most unusual of all is that the Rose Consort of Viols accompanies some of the choral pieces. All in all, this is a distinctive treatment of the music of the most madrigalian of the English Renaissance sacred composers, with rich, resonant sound recorded at the choir's home base. The album hit classical best-seller charts in the spring of 2023.
