In November 2021, Le Concert d’Astrée celebrated its 20th anniversary by giving two performances in Berlin and Paris, conducted by its founder Emmanuelle Haim. This album is an opportunity to look back upon two decades of fruitful and joyous collaboration. Rather than being drenched in nostalgia, this release is a purely cheerful celebration. For two evenings, the majestic Staatsoper Unter den Linden and the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées were filled with the most stunning operatic works by Handel, Rameau, Purcell, Vivaldi and Campra. Le Concert d’Astrée enjoys a solid reputation and was joined by prestigious guests such as Natalie Dessay, Léa Desandre, Sabine Devieilhe, Rolando Villazón and Laurent Naouri. This celebration was also a philanthropic endeavour, with the artists generously donating their fees to the Paris Brain Institute to support medical research.

These galas were recorded live, faithfully reproducing the incredible atmosphere that the public and the artists enjoyed across these two exceptional evenings. Listening to powerful compositions like Rameau’s Indes Galantes and Purcell’s Didon et Enée alongside rare but equally magnificent works like Campra’s Idomeneo or Vivaldi’s Juditha Triumphans is a real treat for the ears!

Emmanuelle Haim, a seasoned conductor, wields a baton that still glistens with vitality. The raucous applause that punctuates the end of the recording is testament to the glittering success of this double celebration. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz
