Alanis Morisette’s tenth album sees her try her hand at meditative music, following in the footsteps of John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen. The psychological benefits of music are well known—from stress relief to improved cognitive performance. The writer of You Oughta Know explains the thought process behind the album’s concept, saying: "Music, for me, is like a portal in a way, an invitation into a state of being that I’m not normally in. Making the record kept me super connected and accountable during COVID, when I felt like I was just going to disappear and float away.” This is an unusual album for a pop singer, and it almost feels like an extension of her podcast, Conversation with Alanis Morissette, which she hosted between October 2015 and December 2018. This podcast revolved predominantly around spirituality and developmentalism. Filled with haunting percussion, droning notes and airy vocals, this album (which was co-written with Dave Harrington) doesn’t shy away from lengthy tracks. It’s evident that this Canadian musician doesn’t hold a stereotypical view on meditation, and she includes much more tempestuous sounds than what you might expect (as heard on the track Mania-resting in the fire, which is inspired by John Zorn’s experimental jazz). Like yin and yang, the calm and the storm reflect either end of Morissette's unique style. This meditative album is as relaxing as it is stimulating.  ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
