Dutchman Thomas Azier is a restless creator who’s constantly searching for his next musical adventure. With every new project, he seeks to experiment with different styles and methods—he’s even working on a concert concept in which the audience can freely move between musicians scattered around the room! To quench his thirst for perpetual revolution (the song ‘Slow Revolution’ is pretty much his manifesto), he relies on musicians. Azier himself is mostly involved with electronic music, but he’s also a gifted pianist. Guitarist Obi Blanche also has a comparable background in electronic sound. The line-up also includes saxophonist Maarten Hogenhuis, who scatters his stunning free-jazz interludes throughout the album (especially in ‘Only the Ocean’ and ‘Blue Eyed Baby’, which features a moving sax/vocal dialogue). While he doesn’t mind rubbing shoulders with traditional pop (‘Invisible’), Thomas Azier’s free and inventive style puts him amongst experimental artists like Scott Walker (one of his idols). This album is brimming with cinematographic atmospheres and pure, unfiltered emotion, offering a soundscape unlike any other. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
