Antonio Carlos Jobim's fame rests almost entirely on his popular songs, composed in the 1950s and '60s with lyricist Vinicius de Moraes; their song "The Girl from Ipanema" became a phenomenal hit in the version featuring Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz. Yet Jobim, like many other popular artists who wished to be taken seriously by classical audiences, worked hard at developing a hybrid yet authentic orchestral style, based on Romantic and Impressionist models, but also inspired by works of the Brazilian master, Heitor Villa-Lobos. This vibrant double-disc presents several of Jobim's richly evocative symphonic essays -- particularly Brasilia, Sinfonia da Alvorada; Orfeu da Conceição; and Lenda -- in live performances, along with many more arrangements of his songs by close associates, such as Claus Ogermann, Nelson Riddle, Mario Adnet, Paolo Jobim, and Eumir Deodato. The instrumental performances by conductor Roberto Minczuk and the Orquestra Sinfónica do Estado de São Paolo are finely polished and smooth, with more than a little swing band bounce; and the suave vocals by Milton Nascimento, Maúcha Adnet, Muiza Adnet, Jurema de Cândia, and Cecília Spyer are warmly embracing and appealing. The sound is great for a concert recording, with only a few directional problems when the singers move around, and occasional noises from an otherwise well-behaved audience.
