Fred Astaire’s entry in Verve's Standards: Great Songs/Great Performances series is an eight-track overview of his pop hits recorded during his tenure with the label in the ‘50s. It is true that not every great song he recorded is here, but it does contain a terrific selection with a backing band that included pianist Oscar Peterson, guitarist Barney Kessel, tenor saxophonist Flip Phillips, trumpeter Charlie Shavers, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Alvin Stoller. While this is a decent budget sampler, those seeking more from these sessions should track down The Astaire Story on Polygram.
