In their excellent third album, the Districts approach rock ’n’ roll with an energy reminiscent of early Arcade Fire records. For Popular Manipulations, the 4-man group from Pennsylvania stepped it up a gear, perfecting their sense of melody and the writing of their choruses. To make this 2017 cuvée even tastier, the Districts invited John Congleton (producer of St. Vincent, Angel Olsen, Kurt Vile, Modest Mouse, Goldfrapp, Cloud Nothings, among many other Rolls Royces of the musical scene) to step behind the mixing console. There's enough there for Rob Grote’s crew to take another step and beef up their indie rock without selling their soul. A pleasant surprise indeed. © MD/Qobuz
