The hit musical comedy Naked Boys Singing is a fun show, conceived and directed by Robert Schrock and with lyrics and music by various writers, which captures many aspects of gay culture with mass appeal. The lyrics are never maudlin or self-deprecating. The fact that the performers perform naked is not at all integral to the show's contents but, as the opening song explains, is nothing more than gratuitous. In the words of the finale, there is no plot but only an exposition.
This is a show of catchy songs that are sometimes cute, sometimes clever, sometimes funny, and sometimes poignant with lyrics limn with verisimilitudinous humor on many aspects of the gay lifestyle in a way that does not offend or demean, but that engenders compassionate understanding in a non-confrontational way. It captures experiences many people, whether gay or straight, have had.
In the apt words of The New York Daily News, the show, is "a Chippendales glee club by a Full Monty Gang." Representative song titles include "The Naked Maid" (how working as a naked maid is just another facet of the entertainment industry), "The Bliss of a Bris" (a satire about the ceremony of a bris [a Jewish male baby's circumcision ceremony]), "Robert Mitchum" (a longing for the days when guys weren't so obsessed with physical appearance, but were satisfied looking a little flawed and more natural), "Perky Little Porn Star" (a Jewish boy from Skokie fulfilling his occupational dream), "Kris, Look What You've Missed" (a lament about a deceased partner), and "Muscle Addiction" (a perky song about the motivation for exercising and working out). This disc of the original Los Angeles cast singing with piano accompaniment also contains a special bonus track dance mix of the reprise song "Window to Window."
