Stripped to its essence, INXS is a band of primal desires: lust and chasing a good time. But damned if it doesn't sound like the stuff of life on Kick, the album that made the Aussies global stars. Party songs "Calling All Nations" and "New Sensation" positively shimmer with squiggling funk guitar, the latter upping the ante with an eye-popping brass blast and Michael Hutchence's breathless sighs. Throughout, the singer conjures up a creature of pure carnality — but it's appealingly more naughty imp than seedy louche. "Never Tear Us Apart" is pure seduction as Hutchence croons "If I hurt you/I’d make wine from your tears." There's a dramatic pause before the insistent drums and 50s greaser guitar kick in. And if the sax wail doesn't make you blush, you might need to see a doctor. The instrumentation on Kick is a knock-out, from the ticking time-bomb drums of “Devil Inside” to the rumbling Motown bass of the title track, and even the way the wolf-ish guitars of “The Loved One” (a rare cover for the band) actually evoke a woman swinging her hips. Truly, there couldn’t be a more apt album title. © Qobuz

"Never Tear Us Apart" is pure seduction as Hutchence croons "If I hurt you/I’d make wine from your tears." There's a dramatic pause before the insistent drums and 50s greaser guitar kick in. And if the sax wail doesn't make you blush, you might need to see a doctor. The instrumentation on Kick is a knock-out, from the ticking time-bomb drums of “Devil Inside” to the rumbling Motown bass of the title track, and even the way the wolf-ish guitars of “The Loved One” (a rare cover for the band) actually evoke a woman swinging her hips. Truly, there couldn’t be a more apt album title. © Qobuz
