The history of the Czech Republic's Martinu Quartet reaches well back into the Communist era, and by now the musicians could probably play these two Dvorák chamber pieces in their sleep. Not that there's anything sleepy about these fine readings. It's just that the players seem to have the music bred into their bones. There's nothing particularly radical about the playing; the group charges through the String Quintet No. 3 in E flat major, Op. 97, with little emphasis on the work's flowering of pentatonic melodies, which have been variously interpreted as fruits of the composer's contact with African-American music and as traces of Czech song. (You could split the difference and say that America put Dvorák in touch with his own roots.) It's not the subtlest version of this quintet, but the sheer perfection and balance of the playing wins you over. Even better is the String Sextet in A major, Op. 48, where the group delivers a sparkling performance that gives full detail to the music's active paired cellos. The sound, from two different venues several years apart, is indifferent, and the booklet from Belgium's Classic Talent label needed a turn with an editor to avoid such markings as the "Allegro gusto" on the quintet's fourth movement. Still, you only go around once in life, and fine chamber playing like this is to be savored when possible.
