The Cedille label has a fine track record of bringing to light attractive contemporary music, and this release by saxophonist Julian Velasco offers an excellent example. Velasco was a winner of the label's emerging-talent competition, and he is a gifted player capable of taking on music ranging from Steven Banks' Come As You Are, strongly influenced by the African American vernacular, to the complex electronics-saxophone interactions of Christopher Cerrone's Liminal Highway, but even better is Velasco's choice of material. Cerrone is a prominent contemporary figure, but none of the composers here is a household name, and all have distinctive styles to offer. The program falls into two halves, the first comprising saxophone-and-piano duos and featuring pianist Winston Choi, while the second has music for Velasco solo, with electronics. Each half offers varied works. The Cerrone piece is extremely virtuosic, and Velasco, who helped the composer with the transcription from a flute-and-electronics original, is unfazed by its difficulties. Especially interesting in the first half are Amanda Harberg's Court Dances, which transfer the spirit of Baroque dances to an environment with more syncopation. The largely tonal acoustic pieces and the atonal electronic ones coexist comfortably, in part to the work of producer James Ginsburg (son of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg), who received a 2022 Grammy nomination for Best Producer in part for this release. A must for lovers of the saxophone, this is a thoroughly enjoyable contemporary release for anyone.
