You couldn't buy Doechii's buzz this past awards season and there was a good reason for it: her music is amazing. The rapper's epic origin story, 2020's "Yucky Blucky Fruitcake" ("I am a Black girl who beat the statistics"), is one of the genre's great debut singles, up there with Eminem's "My Name Is" or Kanye West's "Through the Wire." The tune cycled through so many rapid-fire styles it functioned as its own highlight reel; between that and her Top Dawg Entertainment signing, a true breakthrough was only a matter of when. A few strong EPs and earlier mixtapes were just a warm-up—Alligator Bites Never Heal is 19 songs with no filler in sight. It turns out that this gifted impersonator of early Nicki Minaj can also channel not just the young Roxanne Shanté but Fu-Schnickens as well in the hyperactive breathing exercise "DENIAL IS A RIVER," with the slam dunks "BOILED PEANUTS" and "BOOM BAP" no less aggressive in their lyrical conquests. Her fluency in rap history is total; she invokes Pop Smoke on the dreamy "SLIDE," Ludacris on "GTFO," Tierra Whack on "FIREFLIES," and especially Azealia Banks' better days on the excellent "NISSAN ALTIMA."

But none of these absorbed personae in her toolbox would mean a thing if she wasn't a true, tough original. "DENIAL" especially takes the alter-ego territory of Tyler, the Creator and Eminem to somewhere more therapeutic and introspective without losing those predecessors' outrageous comic timing. She's an unbelievable songwriter; it's easy to take a relatively innocuous inclusion like "BEVERLY HILLS" for granted between more boisterous company. Isolate the track and marvel at a melody as tightly constructed and catchy as anyone else in the genre has proffered in the last year. Alligator Bites Never Heal is one of those mixtape-in-name-only classics like Chance's Acid Rap where the artist has unquestionably arrived in full.
