This CD chronicles the early musical career of New Orleans expatriate Albert Nicholas. Born at the turn of the 20th century, Nicholas became a master of the clarinet, playing with such notables as King Oliver, Baby Dodds, Danny Barker, Buddy Petit, Red Allen, J.C. Higganbottham, Bunk Johnson, Mutt Carey, Luis Russell, Louis Armstrong, and Jelly Roll Morton. As a merchant marine, Nicholas saw parts of the world that were not troubled by the racism he grew up with in the American south. After stints in his hometown as well as Chicago and New York, Nicholas left for the freedom of Paris, where he joined fellow New Orleanian Sidney Bechet. Nicholas made great music in all of those cities. This recording features the musicians mentioned above as well as many more. The repertoire presented is breathtaking in scope and virtuosity. From the first tune, "Jackass Blues," to "I've Got a Heartful of Rhythm," "High Society," "Mr. Clarinet Knocks Twice," "Shim-Me-Sha Wobble," and "Cake Walkin' Babies From Home," this compendium of jazz stylists and music is a knockout.
